Village Heart Water Feature

Centrepoint of the Athlete’s Village for the 2018 Commonwealth Games, the Village Heart Water Feature is inspired by Natural Bridge in Springbrook National Park. The feature provides a visual delivery head to the subsequent lakes system that cascades throughout the parklands, acting as the stormwater retention system for the surrounding development.

The feature itself is a 22m diameter disc structure, constructed as a mixture of steel and timber framing with a fibreglass skin. A 7m oculus is constructed towards the centre of the structure, fitted with custom-designed rainfall units to the perimeter. Treated pool water is pumped from an underground balance tank up to the oculus at varying flow rates to create a variety of effects, where it falls down to the tiled catchment slab below. The water collects in strip drainage to one side, flowing back to the underground balance tank and equipment room. A high-performance ultrafine filtration and fully automatic sanitation system ensures the water is maintained clean and clear, with variable-speed pumps ensuring electrical consumption is minimised. The system is fitted with a touch-screen controller with back-to-base monitoring to allow operators to monitor the system operation remotely from any portable device.

In addition to the feature system, a lake circulation system is provided in the underground room. This system draws water from the lower of the two header lakes adjacent the water feature, passes it through an ultraviolet sanitation system and returns it to a pair of bioreactors or to the lake, depending on the operational requirements.

Aquatic One worked closely with the construction contractor JMAC Constructions and aquatic contractor Commercial Aquatics Australia to develop the water feature system from initial concept designs right through to detailed construction documentation and inspections. The water feature is well received, providing a gentle water movement sound to the surrounding area as well as a natural-style waterplay in the heart of the growing residential precinct.
